Kula Makala is an martial arts school whose chief instructor is John Kedrowski. Kula Makala teaches Dan Zan Ryu Jujutsu, Karate, and Filipino Martial Arts. This dojo focuses on self-defense skills with a full range of empty hand, weapon techniques, mental training methods, and healing techniques/concepts. Makala means to loosen or untie. Kula is Hawaiian for school. Through the disciplined training, students at Kula Makala free themselves by learning how to become better every day. As the famous Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi said, “If you know the way broadly, you will see it in everything.”
At Kula Makala, we value tradition, individual expression, and an adherence to our simple ethical code. Kula Makala Principles are as follows:
1. The Non-Aggression Principle – The initiation of force in human relationships is forbidden.
2. Self Ownership – All individuals own themselves and own the effects of their words/actions.
3. Obligation Principle – The violation of 1 and/or 2 incurs an obligation to rectify the situation.

The Kula Makala Dojo Boundary Waters Canoe Area Program is a dojo tradition that Mr. Kedrowski learned from his Tang Soo Do sensei Mr. Daniel Knoll. Mr. Kedrowski helped plan and lead his first dojo trip in 1999 under the guidance of Daniel Knoll sensei. The purpose of this program is to take the lessons from the dojo and apply them in a different setting outside of the dojo. The skills of observation, attention to detail, risk management, and self discipline are theoretical in the dojo and require hands-on realistic training outside of the dojo in order to fully develop. Martial arts students who attend this program come away with a new holistic view of their training in the dojo. The trip is a vehicle for personal development that increases a student's confidence, motivation, self esteem, perseverance, and resilience. All of these experiences are services offered by the Kula Makala Dojo for students and non students. Please contact us if you are interested in organizing a trip.
Backpacking experiences are another service offered by the Kula Makala Dojo. Mr. Kedrowski started backpacking on Isle Royale in 1989 and has since expanded from Minnesota, to the greater US, to Hawaii, to New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Iceland. All of these experiences are services offered by the Kula Makala Dojo for students and non students. Please contact us if you are interested in organizing a trip.
In 2015, Kula Makala began offering international trips. We began with the Dingle Way in Ireland, we graduated to Skaftafell National Park in Iceland, we hiked Te Urewera in New Zealand, we pushed through the formidable West Highland Way in Scotland, and we tackled the Tour Du Mont Blanc. All of these trips are services offered by the Kula Makala Dojo for students and non-students. Please contact us if you are interested in organizing a trip.
We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours.
